The nature of consumerism…

I am a victim of my own work!!

I’ve fallen for Apple’s beautiful shiny brand and am mere moments away from purchasing a new Macbook.

I’m currently running an iMac but as I’m always traveling backwards and forwards from home to London to visit the boyfriend, who also has a laptop (Macbook Pro) which he takes to work with him everyday, thus rendering me useless in the daytime as with no computer I am unable to do work.

There is not a chance that I’m going to sell my lovely iMac as I’m not about to make the severe decrease in screen size for everyday work when I’m home. I know I could get a cinema screen but ummm have you seen the prices recently??

I really have no choice… well, thats my point. I feel like I have no choice, because that is the effect Apple has over me. “Look at how convenient our laptops are!!” Oh, they are very nifty. Perhaps I’ll have one.

Street map of the USA
Found on Digg.com (you may be noticing by now that I go there alot. This is what I do when I’m waiting for email responses from clients, well that my story and I’m sticking to it!!)

All of the streets in the lower 48 United States: an image of 26 million individual road segments. No other features (such as outlines or geographic features) have been added to this image, however they emerge as roads avoid mountains, and sparse areas convey low population. The pace of progress is seen in the midwest where suburban areas are punctuated by square blocks of area that are still farm land.

Amazing attention to detail, twenty six million individual road segments of the USA mapped out! I would be interested to see what the UK would look like? I imagine quite similar to this US version sparser in the centre… but I’m not about to find out, I wouldn’t know where to start when creating a map like this!

A picture can say 1000 words…

first digital camera
I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix S1 from Ebay as I’ve not actually had my own digital camera until now. (Yes, as has been pointed out by my boyfriend, this is an outdated piece of equipment!)
Though I feel it was about time I took a step into the ever-so scary future. Erm future, not so much, it is an oldish camera but will serve its digital purpose for now.

Invented in 1975 by Steven J. Sasson. It weighed eight pounds, was the size of a toaster, and produced a 0.01 megapixel image that took 23 seconds to record onto a digital cassette tape.

Twenty three seconds?! Cassette tape?? That is an actual nightmare.

Cameras are a tricky topic for me to discuss as I prefer grainy non-digital photographs and crappy Polaroid images, something that if you tell any self respecting nerd and you’ll be met with a look of absolute horror. Arguably justified.

Technology moves on for a reason, creating better images is the point. But “better” is a matter of opinion, especially in design!

My next camera buy will be an old Polaroid camera, (preferably black and white) I’ve been checking Ebay regularly but no luck so far. Heartbreaking!

starsthumb

Visible in this image are dense knots of dark interstellar dust, bright stars that have formed in the past few million years, fields of glowing hydrogen gas ionized by these stars, and great loops of gas expelled by dying stars.

Isn’t it beautiful? Found on Digg.com

stress
Though I’m not at university anymore, dissertations over with and projects are handed in and graded, nearly a whole year has past now. Yet even still, I find myself feeling the strain of deadlines! Things never change.
Project ends looming and no matter how far ahead I actually am, I always want to do more work… and I’m not sure if that could be classed as a good thing or a bad thing? [ponder]

Being a perfectionist can be a curse and yet a blessing! I will never be “finished”.

Weird weather we’ve been having huh?It seems almost as though as soon as it was “declared” spring we started getting snowed on all over the country… not that I mind, I love snow and I also love this new Sony video. I know its not snow but its just as beautiful!Sony’s adverts never cease to impress me, though I do feel like this is missing the kaleidoscope of colour that usually features.

Here are the links to watch the other Sony Bravia videos… Bouncy Balls, Plasticine Rabbits and last, but not least, Exploding Paint. Enjoy!

10 Worst Interview Questions…

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

I found this link while stumbling through Digg.com and /sigh I haven’t been asked any of these but I hope I never do either!

My personal favourite was…

“where do you see yourself in five years?” you should answer it thusly… “Asking you this question as you ‘reinterview for your position” (don’t forget the menacing air quotes). Rubbing your hands together and cackling works nicely, too.

You will find the link *here*

penguin thumb

Well well… Turns out that I am allowed to talk about who I’m working for, I’m just not allowed to show mine or any other peoples ideas on the project. (A bit obvious really!)

So, to spill the beans, [queue drum roll] I’m currently working for Aardman as the creative lead in charge of the merchandise design ideas for a new animated short they are currently making. I have seen the story boards and it looks magical! I’m really excited about it all!

I have *hearted* Wallace and Gromit since I was small so this is truly amazing.

UPDATE: Um, no, this is not an April Fools joke but thanks for asking!!
