The BBC iPlayer should be one of the most useful video watching devices available on the internet. Its tagline “making the unmissable, unmissable” makes you breathe a sigh of relief that you can still have a life, not be a slave to your TV’s schedule and yet it still means you get to watch The apprentice… or does it?
Being very busy, I don’t very often get to venture away from my computer screen so I find myself missing out on a alot of things that I know I would like to watch. While browsing through the programs that had been on in the last week, I found an episode of Panorama and sat down to watch it, only to find that my internet connection kept dropping and disconnecting me.
I am with BT, which means I have one of those ridiculous BT Home Hubs, which are always slowing down my connection speed in the evening, but this time it wasn’t slowing down, it was literally turning itself off and restarting.
So after the fourth time my router turned itself off I Googled the problem and had a startling amount of results appear. Such as this which tells of how the iPlayer is a peer-to-peer program, which means its always uploading and downloading content continuously.
The BBC is already in regular discussions with several ISPs and is working on finding a solution to the problems. “We will be playing our part in this, and are working closely with ISPs… to deliver the best experience that we can to the audience,” the BBC said in a statement earlier this week.
The ISP trade association has issued a statement saying that it will be monitoring the service closely, especially as the service is set to expand over the next few months. I can only hope this will improve the service as at the moment its making the unmissable, unwatchable.
