Where the Hell is Matt 2008

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

A couple of months ago I posted a video by Matt Harding.

He had gone travelling and done his renound silly dance in lots of different places. Him and his girlfriend Melissa made a compilation video of the many places he danced in and a couple of years later someone found it and made him famous. Stride chewing gum company then sponsored him to travel the world and do it again… so he did.

Above is the video of the second trip. On Matt’s site he says that this second video is his favourite, he doesn’t say why but to be honest I much prefer the first video. This second one seems less environment focussed, it’s more cityscape and has more people in it. I liked the different landscapes from the first one.

Take a peek and see what you think!

Just because I’m falling, doesn’t mean I fell

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

falling.jpg

“When the social elevator is broken you have to know how to bounce. Between the take off and the fall, the man parachuted in the city learns to control his trajectory.

In the rough manner of architecture, he opposes the elasticity between his body and his desires. This gravitation exercice requires Discipline, even if it’s not the one we’ve learned in classrooms. After the riots of last autumn, the photograph Denis Darzacq realized 16 of those perilous shots, that says the turbulences and the life in precarious balance.”

BBC iPlayer… A bandwidth hog.

Friday, June 20th, 2008

iplayer.jpg

The BBC iPlayer should be one of the most useful video watching devices available on the internet. Its tagline “making the unmissable, unmissable” makes you breathe a sigh of relief that you can still have a life, not be a slave to your TV’s schedule and yet it still means you get to watch The apprentice… or does it?

Being very busy, I don’t very often get to venture away from my computer screen so I find myself missing out on a alot of things that I know I would like to watch. While browsing through the programs that had been on in the last week, I found an episode of Panorama and sat down to watch it, only to find that my internet connection kept dropping and disconnecting me.

I am with BT, which means I have one of those ridiculous BT Home Hubs, which are always slowing down my connection speed in the evening, but this time it wasn’t slowing down, it was literally turning itself off and restarting.

So after the fourth time my router turned itself off I Googled the problem and had a startling amount of results appear. Such as this which tells of how the iPlayer is a peer-to-peer program, which means its always uploading and downloading content continuously.

The BBC is already in regular discussions with several ISPs and is working on finding a solution to the problems. “We will be playing our part in this, and are working closely with ISPs… to deliver the best experience that we can to the audience,” the BBC said in a statement earlier this week.

The ISP trade association has issued a statement saying that it will be monitoring the service closely, especially as the service is set to expand over the next few months. I can only hope this will improve the service as at the moment its making the unmissable, unwatchable.

Hyper

I love the supermarket… well, I love food. But visually you wont find more brands per square inch anywhere else. My favourite image is the one above, looks like the yoghurt aisle and I like how the different products create squares of colour on the shelves, almost like a colour palate.

BMW Fabric Car…

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

bmwheader.jpg

Concept cars give automotive designers a chance to let their imaginations run wild, often with outlandish results. But even by that measure, BMW has come up with something as strange as it is innovative — a shape-shifting car covered with fabric.

Instead of steel, aluminum or even carbon fiber, the GINA Light Visionary Model has a body of seamless fabric stretched over a movable metal frame that allows the driver to change its shape at will.

The car — which actually runs and drives — is a styling design headed straight for the BMW Museum in Munich and so it will never see production, but building a practical car wasn’t the point.

iPhone 3G - Back in White!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

iphonewhite.jpg

It’s finally here, the first phone to beat the iPhone. Its surfs the web and downloads data twice as fast, for half the price.

Introducing…

The new iPhone 3G!

It’s been a long, leak-filled wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware — Apple’s taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around.

Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they’re also making sure it’s available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps… and does it all for cheaper.

Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and 16GB for $299 in black or white. (Both price points require a contract, of course.) Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th.

Want!

Especially as they’re making it in black/white again rather than silver. Everyone makes silver/black items, something that I’ve always loved about Apple’s branding its its unique use of “white”. ^_^

And if you were silly enough to buy an original iPhone after May 27th (despite all the rumours about a 3G version!!) you can trade it in for the new version.

64 = 65??

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

6465.png

Can it be possible? Does 64 really equal 65? Watch the animation and decide for yourself…

…And then read the article and see why it’s not true :)

Basically, when put into the new rectangle, the shapes don’t fit together exactly. This leaves a long, thin parallelogram (can be just about seen in the picture by the thickening of the lines.) Because of the numbers used, the Fibonacci sequence, this has an area of exactly 1. So, 65 now equals 64 +1, which makes more sense. The next bit explains that this extra bit is always + or - 1, so becomes unnoticeable as the overall size increases.

Wild hair day…

Friday, June 6th, 2008

lion

I stumbled across these amazing hairstyles created by Japanese artist Nagi Noda.

A debate then cropped up about whether they were created out of the models real hair or wigs? Or even if they are completely photoshopped. The general consensus is that they were photoshopped, but I happened to disagree, and with a little bit of internet sifting I found a video proving they were atleast wigs.

In my opinion, they look like hair that has been wrapped around the contours of animals, and then merged in with the models actual hair.

Have a look for yourself and try to decide!

Sunset on Mars

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

marssunset.jpg

As part of their Image of the Day series, NASA posted a beautiful image of a sunset on Mars sent by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit on May 19, 2005.

Even though this is one of the older Mars images, I thought that in the spirit of Mars exploration I would find, what I think, is a really powerful image.

This Panoramic Camera (Pancam) mosaic was taken around 6:07 in the evening of the rover’s 489th Martian day, or sol. Spirit was commanded to stay awake briefly after sending that sol’s data to the Mars Odyssey orbiter just before sunset…

…Because Mars is farther from the Sun than the Earth is, the Sun appears only about two-thirds the size that it appears in a sunset seen from the Earth.

World of Warcraft: The Movie!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

warcraftartbig.jpg

I *love* World of Warcraft! I played it all the way through university since release day on US servers (Stormrage, if you are interested!) in between studying of course… and now there is a World of Warcraft movie in production.

It’s going to be created in live action, with the same producer as the epic 300 [Thomas Tull] it will be focussed around a male alliance character - my guess is a human! :P

Rumour has it that a budget of over $100 million has been committed to the production of the film, and I’m not surprised in the slightest. Given that Blizzard has over 8 million players in World of Warcraft each paying $15 a month, they make $120 million each month!

Here is a bit of an insight…

“It’s actually not like the great adventure. It’s not so much a quest movie. It’s more of a war movie. Well, okay, it’s absolutely a war movie. Cultures grinding up to a horrible moment where it just all spills over and gets out of control. Less of an adventure party quest-type situation. More of an armies building to an inevitable conclusion type situation…”

No director or cast have yet been assigned to the project and Tull stated that recognizable actors to play main roles was not a necessity:

“We are starting those conversations. We’re going to be looking for someone of Zak Snyder (300) or Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Batman Beings) calibre,”
